A St Catherine man was on Monday fatally shot during a tussle with cops who attempted to take him into custody.

He has been identified by the police as 33-year-old labourer O'Shane Cunningham of Jones Avenue in Spanish Town.

The police reported that about 5:10 p.m., members of the Area Five Fugitive Apprehension Team conducted a surveillance operation in Twickenham Park Estate in St Catherine on Cunningham.

The police say he was accosted.

According to the police, during an attempt to search him, a physical tussle developed between Cunningham and the police, which saw him falling to the ground.

The police report that while on the ground, Cunningham attempted to pull a gun from his waistband and the cops took evasive action and opened fire, shooting him.

The police say a Taurus GR nine millimetre pistol was retrieved from Cunningham.

He was assisted to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The matter is being probed by the Independent Commission of Investigations.
