Heavy traffic the new normal

Published:Wednesday | February 28, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is quite unsettling that in the second month of 2018, we have managed to pass a road traffic act after years of deliberations, but fail to address the traffic nightmares to which we have become accustomed.

The new normal for my daily commute has moved from an average of 15 minutes to one hour in Kingston. Frequent activities like going to the supermarket, getting to and from school on time, trying to get to meetings on time, now require preparation times of up to three hours. Then you are faced with the following situations: blocked intersections; roadworks at peak hours; taxi men cutting lines of traffic.

Analysis needed

Daily commutes have become an assault on productivity. Is it the sudden influx of cars in the Corporate Area or the rise of new housing developments, without serious analysis of the implications this will have on neighbourhoods, that has caused the problem?

In a recent All Angles programme, host Dionne Jackson-Miller asked about the implication of high-rise developments in the Corporate Area, to which there was little

in-depth details provided about procedures for housing developments.

Citizens in neighbourhoods should asks these hard questions as well. While I agree that there should be housing developments provided for young professionals, development should not be the reality for only Kingston and St Andrew.
