Following news that she has booked a place in the final 40 of the Miss World competition, support is mounting for Miss Jamaica World, Toni-Ann Singh. The multitalented 23-year-old won the fast-track talent competition in London on Tuesday when she delivered a rendition of Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing. With that performance, Singh, who has been prominently featured on the official social media pages for the Miss World competition, is now a huge favourite for the crown.

Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, franchise holder of the Miss Jamaica World competition Weston Haughton said he believes that Singh has what it takes to place highly in the competition.

“I might sound conceited when I say this, but I knew she was going to go over there and conquer that talent competition because she is an absolutely fantastic singer. She sang what she was comfortable with, and we’re happy it paid off,” he said. “We’re looking forward to her being in the top 10, then top five, and, hopefully, walking away with the crown.”

Though taking home the title of Miss World 2019 would be quite the accomplishment, Haughton says Singh is more concerned with representing her country to the fullest. “She’s been very humble. She says it’s a lot of work, but she remains focused through it all. She’s more concerned with representing the country to the best of her ability than she is about winning,” he said. “She’s aware that there are 100 and sup’m girls, and they’re all talented and beautiful, and so she just wants to go out and do her best. She is a phenomenal young woman who takes great pride in representing her country, and we’re very proud of her.”

Haughton went on to say that Singh’s win in the talent competition, coupled with the fact that the competition is in London, where the diaspora is strong, support has been growing tremendously. “Support has always been there, but it is certainly mounting. People have been very thankful that the show is in London, and so we expect the diaspora will show up very strongly for Toni-Ann on Saturday. “

Strong support

“Jamaicans in London have been saying that they are going to turn out in their numbers to go and support her, and we’re happy for that.”

A watch party is set to take place at a popular hotel in Kingston on Saturday morning. Haughton said the location would be announced ahead of the show. He also revealed that for the first time in years, the competition would be broadcast live on Television Jamaica, and so he’s urging Jamaicans to tune in. “Jamaica, take out your Jamaican flags and get ready to wave it when Toni-Ann Singh is announced Miss World 2019.”
