LIAT downsizing workforce
The Antigua-based regional airline, LIAT, Tuesday remained mum on its efforts to downsize its workforce after a memo from the airline gave workers until Friday to accept a voluntary separation employment package (VSEP).
LIAT's corporate communications manager, Desmond Browne, would not divulge aspects of the plan or how many workers had already expressed an interest in accepting the VSEP.
"LIAT is continuing to establish a structure that is more appropriate to the future needs of the company, which includes taking structural reforms necessary to strengthen the organisation.
"LIAT is moving strategically to reposition itself as an efficient and successful airline," Brown told the Observer Radio.
Brown would not say how many of the airline's 900 staff applications would be accepted, noting "the company's acceptance of any application would be consistent "with the aims of the restructuring exercise.
He said LIAT would continue with its "broad efforts to strengthen its structure", but refrained also from giving any date when the exercise would take effect.
In the memo sent to workers, LIAT said it would respond to the applications received by June 15.
The Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union, which represents the workers, is scheduled to meet with the company on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
