Reaping the bitter fruit

The Editor, Sir:

I read the article by Keith Noel (May 20) and fully appreciate the concise history presented. We have somehow lost the identity of self, which our great national hero, Marcus Garvey tried so hard to encourage. As a result, we have simply failed at nationhood and instead have become a mockery to the modern world. We have lost all moral sense of direction, which is why we have become stagnant.

We were not prepared as a people for Independence and as such, continue to make the same mistakes each time elections are held. Politicians have their agendas and have not replaced anything that our colonial masters had in place here. So the Willie Lynch syndrome perpetuates where blacks turn on blacks without seeing who we really are and what is our true image and purpose.

The seeds of 'donship' were sown by politicians as intimidatory tactics for election victories and parliamentary power. Now that we are reaping the fruits, oh what a bitter and awful taste!

I am, etc.,
