STETHS’ struggles continue, Cambridge earn draw
BEN FRANCIS Cup champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) are yet to register a goal, much less a win, in this season’s ISSA daCosta Cup, as they drew 0-0 in their Zone E match on Saturday.
STETHS’ Kaieem Lewis had multiple clear chances to take the lead in the first half but could not get it done, while B.B. Coke’s Ottis Powell could not convert from six yards away.
In other games, Cornwall College got back to winning ways after Wednesday’s draw against St James High with the 7-0 thumping of Irwin High.
Maldon High remained perfect from three games as they thrashed Herbert Morrison 5-0 to win three games.
Meanwhile, underdogs Cambridge High created history, registering their first point against Frome with 1-1 draw in their Zone B home game at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay.
An 89th-minute penalty from Cambridge’s Jayr Moore gave them the point, leaving head coach Garrett Dennis a grateful man.
“When Frome play against us, it is always a competitve one. We said, this year, we will manage the games properly and get good results. We did that today and could have pinched it in the end,” Dennis said.
The presence of lightning delayed the start to the game but, when it did, Frome were the more dominant team.
Early in the first half, Frome’s Ramondo Eccleston was inches away from giving his team the lead with a header. However, in the 36th minute, Frome’s Wayne Mullings capitalised from an error from Cambridge’s goalkeeper, Daniel Reid.
In the second half, Cambridge gained momentum but still gave up chances even as they created them.
In the 89th minute, Frome’s Romario Clarke’s careless foul in the the box resulted in a penalty being awarded to Cambridge.
Frome’s head coach Cleighton Stephens took positives from the result as well.
“It was a good game and I saw that Cambridge stuck to their game plan. My guys got comfortable in the second half and lost their discipline,” said Stephens.
“We have to just make some adjustments and look forward to our match against Rusea’s on Tuesday,” he added.
