Greater effort to address needs of persons with disabilities, please
THE EDITOR, Madam:
This is an open letter to Prime Minister of Jamaica, Dr Andrew Michael Holness
I am writing to express my deep concern about the growing number of persons with disabilities and the pressing issues they face in accessing affordable housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities. As the economic spending power of persons with disabilities continues to be a significant contributor to the Jamaican economy, it is imperative that we prioritise their needs and work towards creating a more inclusive and accessible society.
The Jamaica Paraplegic Foundation (JAMPAR) and other organisations have been advocating for the rights and needs of persons with disabilities, but more needs to be done to address the systemic barriers that hinder their full participation in society. The Disabilities Act of 2014 and its accompanying regulations in 2021 marked a significant milestone in our nation’s commitment to safeguarding and enhancing the welfare of persons with disabilities.
However, despite these efforts, persons with disabilities continue to face significant challenges in accessing:
1) Affordable housing: Many persons with disabilities struggle to access affordable and accessible housing, which exacerbates their economic and social exclusion.
2) Healthcare and medical assistance: Persons with disabilities often require specialised medical care and assistance, which can be costly and inaccessible.
3) Employment opportunities: The unemployment rate among persons with disabilities is alarmingly high, and many are forced to rely on limited social services.
To address these challenges, there should be a collaborative effort between the Government and private sector to:
a) Develop and implement policies and programmes to increase the availability of affordable and accessible housing options for persons with disabilities.
b) Enhance healthcare services and provide medical assistance to persons with disabilities, including access to specialised care and assistive devices.
c) Implement policies and programmes to promote employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, including job training, mentorship, and employment incentives.
The Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities has been working tirelessly to promote the rights and needs of persons with disabilities. I urge you to consider their recommendations and work towards creating a more inclusive and accessible society for all Jamaicans.
