Politicians, what legacy are you leaving?
THE EDITOR, Madam:
Some time ago, if I can recall, a noted public figure classified Jamaica as a failed state. Someone may argue and try to rationalise the context for which the statement was made. At the moment this is not my concern. Still yet, I would want to agree with the view being shared by some, that while economically there has been great progress, at the same time there is very little progress on how our political leaders are managing the country as it relates to good governance.
It is time for our political leaders on either side of the political divide to come to an understanding that the best kind of leadership is leadership by example. This is not being seen coming from our leaders in Gordon House. The behaviour of several of our politicians has left much to be desired. We are not seeing or experiencing strong, quality leadership and governance being demonstrated by our politicians of either party.
The harsh reality is that our current crop of politicians is taking the country down a trajectory that leads us nowhere but to a state of anarchy. Could this be one of the reasons why there is such a great level of political apathy being demonstrated by the populace? Many of us are failing to identify with the political process by not voting. And it seems some politicians don’t mind.
Personally, I have become weary of their demeanour – their unbusinesslike and unprofessional manner in how some conduct themselves, both inside and outside of Parliament.
Politicians, remember you are being watched. Take stock and ask yourself, ‘Am I being an example to the younger generation coming up after me?’ ‘What legacy am I leaving?’
