Beware the bikers

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I don't have the statistics to prove it, but going by news reports I've seen, it appears there has been an upsurge in crimes being committed by persons driving motorcycles. Whether relatively 'petty' crimes, such as grabbing handbags and cell phones, or major acts such as shootings and murders, motorcycles seem to be the mode of transport of choice among the criminally inclined.

What can be done about this? I have personally witnessed a few occasions on which bikers grabbed handbags and in no time disappeared. I have also seen bikers ride right around policemen attempting to stop them. The policemen, on the occasions I witnessed, were unwilling or unable to go after the bikers. I think that our crime problem is so bad now that we would be justified in implementing a temporary ban on all motorcycles. I can already hear the chorus of persons who disagree. But at least let's have a discussion.
