WESTERN BUREAU:

Doctors and nurses at the Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) in Montego Bay, St James, can now conduct operations in greater comfort and safety, after receiving an early Christmas gift of 1,440 disposable medical scrubs courtesy of United States-based medical apparel company RepScrubs and Jamaican charity Sarah’s Children.

The scrubs, which are valued at J$2 million and included sets of plastic head coverings and shoe coverings, were presented to the CRH staff on December 16, during a handover ceremony at the hospital.

Dr Dwayne Hall, CRH’s head of surgery, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying it would help to reduce the cost generally incurred for cleaning medical scrubs after every procedure.

“This donation is going to go a far way, because one of our major costs in the hospital is cleaning scrubs that were used, so we have to take them to the laundry where they are treated, blood and all forms of contamination are removed, and then they are ironed for use again. This gift will remove all of that cost,” said Hall.

“We have received 1,440 scrubs, and this can serve us for months and save the hospital a lot of money. They look good and they feel good, and we just want to say ‘Thank you’,” added Hall.

The donation comes at a time when medical staff have been constantly on call to treat patients following the recent passage of Hurricane Melissa. CRH was one of five hospitals in western Jamaica which suffered infrastructural damage during the passage of the Category 5 hurricane.

Janet Silvera, the chairman of Sarah’s Children, said the scrubs were procured after partners in Florida reached out to RepScrubs’ chief executive officer, Jeffrey Feuer, for help to ease the pressures facing Jamaica’s healthcare system following the hurricane.

“When the situation in Jamaica was explained, there was absolutely no hesitation from RepScrubs. Within no time, they sent us two pallets of scrubs to Jamaica, and we got the assistance of the National Health Fund, and within no time these boxes were here in Montego Bay,” said Silvera.

“We have been reaching out to partners across the world since Hurricane Melissa, sourcing medical supplies, essentials, and support for those on the front lines. This donation speaks directly to our mission as well, to support those who serve, especially in moments of crisis,” Silvera added.

“In any operating theatre or clinical space, scrubs are not just uniforms; they are a critical layer of protection. Something as simple as a fresh set of scrubs can literally be the difference between recovery and complication.”
