Bloomfield signs with Puma
Four hundred metre sprinter Akeem Bloomfield, formerly of Kingston College, has decided to go professional after signing with sporting brand Puma International. Bloomfield had what many described as a fantastic collegiate season, which ended with a personal best of 43.94 seconds in the event. This gave him a second-place finish for the University of Auburn at the recent NCAA Outdoor Division 1 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, and made him the fastest Jamaican in the 400m and third on the World Senior IAAF top list this season.
"It has been a pretty good season for me and I have ran some really fast times, and I was getting some good offers," Bloomfield said. "Puma has been the backbone of Jamaican track and field and to sign with them, it is a wonderful feeling."
Bloomfield was asked if his sub-44 seconds run had hastened him to make a decision now to go professional. "The decision to go professional has been in the works a good while now and I knew I was going to run fast, but didn't know I was going to run that fast. The 43.94-seconds run really catapulted me to make the decision," he said.
Despite going professional, with two years to go to complete his college degree, he stated that the decision will not stop him from doing so. "I will still be going to college, as I will be paying my way. I am going to change location and go somewhere else where there is a much warmer climate to train. I have not yet decided on my management staff, but my coach at Auburn will be dealing with that and will ensure I make the right choice," he continued.
Bloomfield said that he will test the waters on the European circuit for the remainder of the season.
